Purpose of the Position

Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Director of Operations will lead the CLT’s internal operations and oversee key functions including office systems, internal controls, risk management, IT systems, human resources, planning, and communications. The Director of Operations will work closely and collaboratively with the Finance, Development, and Real Estate and Asset Management teams.


Key Responsibilities 

The Director of Operations’ main responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Co-ordinate strategic and operational planning to realize the mission of the CLT and align organizational strategy with the CLT’s vision and goals

  • Develop and oversee office systems to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization

  • Procure and oversee implementation of IT systems appropriate to the scale and sophistication of CLT operations, to improve business systems and performance outcomes

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive risk management system, including robust cyber security systems and enhanced control systems, to mitigate internal and external risks including fraud risk assessment

  • Ensure that appropriate insurance coverage is in place for the full range of risk exposure and activities of the organization

  • Oversee the implementation of a comprehensive communications plan and program

  • Secure and oversee adequate office space for the current and future staffing and operational needs of the organization

  • Develop and implement reporting systems for the CLT’s board and management

  • Develop and oversee the implementation of a full suite of policies and procedures to ensure the sound management and administration of the CLT’s operations

  • Oversee the recruitment, onboarding, training and professional development of CLT employees

  • Develop and oversee bench strength and succession planning for key positions

  • Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, ambition, continuous improvement and accountability

  • Other duties within the scope and purpose of the position, as needed


Preferred Qualities & Experience 

The CLT is currently seeking a Director of Operations to join their growing team and play an integral role in the growth of the organization.  They expect their portfolio to include more than 3,500 homes in the next three years, with projects actively under development and construction. You will ensure that internal controls are working effectively and implement sound processes to achieve the organization’s operational priorities goals while prudently managing risk. You are not afraid of tackling unfamiliar challenges and enjoy collaborating with different people to come to common solutions. You are looking to leave your mark on a growing organization and enjoy thinking of creative, efficient ways to use technology.  

The ideal candidate for this position must be an organized individual with a proven ability to multi-task, problem-solve and prioritize challenging workloads independently. 

Education and Experience

  • The successful candidate will have a post secondary degree in business administration or other relevant discipline, and five or more years of strategic or operational leadership experience in non-profit or co-operative administration in non-market housing or comparable sector.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proven experience and knowledge of project, change and process management

  • Leadership, coaching, and training skills in mentoring direct reports and staff

  • Ability to lead the organization’s technology strategy and related projects

  • Demonstrated collaborative leadership approach and a proven ability to foster integration across teams

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills

  • Excellent computer skills including MS Office: Excel, Word and PowerPoint

Working Requirements

Remote working arrangements available with a minimum of three days in the office. Candidates have the option to work in the office full-time.


Compensation & Search Process 

This Director of Operations position is a senior strategic leadership role, with direct potential to create impact and directly contribute to affordable, inclusive and accessible housing. The CLT will offer a salary budgeted between $150,000 to $170,000, depending on experience, in addition to extended benefits, vacation and RRSP contributions.

The search process may include conventional longlist, shortlist, and committee interview stages. We will request that finalists offer comprehensive recent references and to complete a background check.
