Renfrew Collingwood Seniors’ Society (the “Society”) is a community-focused organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for older adults and elders. Established in 1976, the Society promotes wellness and independence through the provision of compassionate care and engaging services.
The Society currently operates with 20 staff in a unionized environment and a ~$2,000,000 budget funded through Vancouver Coastal Health and the City of Vancouver. The Society runs two day centres in Vancouver’s Renfrew Collingwood neighbourhood and serves a diverse community, including a large Chinese Canadian population, through various staffed day programs and health care and support services.

The Opportunity
Due to the retirement of their well-respected, long-term incumbent Executive Director, the Society is seeking a visionary and empathetic leader to oversee its operations and strategic vision for its next pivotal chapter. The Executive Director will lead all aspects of the Society’s operations, including program development, fundraising, staff management, community engagement, and financial stewardship.
This role offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of senior care services in diverse communities, advocate for improved standards, and build community partnerships. With a dedicated team and Board, stable funding, and a strong foundation, the incoming Executive Director will focus on supporting the continued integration of their newly established Chown Adult Day Centre, safeguarding the Society’s mission and quality of services in light of competing demands, and ensuring optimal staffing, infrastructure, and programming to serve the diverse needs of its clients, many who speak English as a second language.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership:
Develop and implement strategic plans to advance the organization's mission and goals in alignment with the needs of the senior community and the broader social services landscape.
Identify emerging trends, opportunities, and challenges in the field of aging adults services, and adapt organizational strategies accordingly.
Program Development and Management:
Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of high-quality Adult Day Programs and Community Programs that meet the diverse needs and interests of seniors in our community.
Collaborate with staff, volunteers, and stakeholders to design innovative programs and services that promote wellness, social engagement, and cognitive stimulation for seniors.
Fundraising and Resource Development:
Lead fundraising efforts to secure financial support from government grants and individual donors. Cultivate and steward relationships with donors and community partners to ensure ongoing support for our programs and services.
Serve as the primary liaison with funders, responding to inquiries, providing requested documentation, and maintaining positive relationships to secure ongoing support for our programs and services.
Financial Management:
Manage the organization's budget and financial resources effectively, ensuring transparency, accountability, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
Develop and implement financial strategies to sustain and grow the organization's programs and impact.
Prepare regular financial reports and budget updates for funders, ensuring accuracy and compliance with grant agreements and reporting deadlines.
Coordinate with external auditors to facilitate annual audits and ensure compliance with auditing standards and regulatory requirements.
Staff Leadership and Development:
Provide strong leadership and mentorship to a dedicated team of staff and volunteers, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning.
Support staff professional development through training, coaching, and performance management initiatives.
Promote equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) within the organization, ensuring that all staff feel valued, respected, and empowered to contribute their unique perspectives and talents.
Community Engagement and Advocacy:
Serve as a visible and respected advocate for seniors and aging issues in the community.
Build strong relationships with stakeholders, including seniors, families, caregivers, government agencies, and other community organizations.
Engage in strategic partnerships to address systemic barriers and promote positive social change for seniors.
Board Relations and Governance:
Work closely with the Board of Directors to provide regular updates, strategic guidance, and support for board committees.
Collaborate with the Board to ensure effective governance and adherence to the organization's mission, values, and policies.
Organizational Policy Development:
Develop and implement organizational policies and procedures to ensure compliance with legal requirements, best practices, and ethical standards.
Review and update policies regularly to reflect changes in the external environment and emerging needs within the organization.
Provide guidance and support to staff and volunteers in understanding and adhering to organizational policies and procedures.
Operations Management:
Oversee day-to-day operations of the organization, including facility management, IT infrastructure, and administrative processes.
Ensure that all programs and services are delivered efficiently, effectively, and in accordance with established standards and guidelines.
Identify opportunities for process improvement and implement measures to enhance organizational efficiency and effectiveness.
Essential Qualities & Experience
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Non-profit Management, Social Work, Gerontology, Public Administration, or a related field.
Minimum of 5 years of progressive leadership experience in a comparable unionized organization, preferably in the field of senior services, healthcare, social services, disabilities, or other day programming.
Cantonese language skills or experience working with Chinese Canadian or other immigrant communities would be an asset.
Demonstrated success in program development, grant writing, and financial management.
Strong understanding of the issues affecting seniors and experience working with diverse populations, including individuals with disabilities, dementia, or other complex needs.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
Proven ability to inspire and motivate staff, volunteers, and stakeholders towards a common vision and goals.
Knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, and best practices in non-profit governance and compliance.
Ability to work collaboratively with a Board of Directors and other stakeholders to achieve organizational objectives.
Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), with demonstrated experience implementing EDI initiatives in a non-profit or community-based setting.
Compensation & Search Process
The Society offers a competitive compensation package, including salary range budgeted between $145,000-$160,000, in addition to contributions to the Municipal Pension Plan (Defined Benefit Pension), comprehensive benefits, and vacation.
The search process may include conventional longlist, shortlist, and committee interview stages. We will request for finalists to offer comprehensive references, and complete a thorough background check. We expect to complete our first review of applications by November 8, 2024.
