The firm was founded in 1982 by Joe Murphy, Q.C. and Joe Battista, Q.C., two of the province’s most respected and accomplished trial lawyers. It now enjoys 27 lawyers and 59 staff. With its roots in injury law, the firm has strategically expanded and diversified its services to include a robust class actions, sex assault, and broader insurance disputes practice.
The Opportunity
Director of Administration
As the firm has recently experienced transformational growth and expansion into new regions and practice areas, Murphy Battista is seeking an inaugural Director of Administration, who will be charged with leading and supporting the firm’s administrative staff throughout its offices, as well as overseeing all operational matters relating to facilities.
Reporting to the Managing Partner and located at Murphy Battista’s downtown Vancouver office, the Director of Administration’s initial priority will be to harmonize and modernize policies and practices across office locations to ensure consistent service delivery, promote a positive culture of excellence, and attract and retain talent.
Responsibilities:
The Director of Administration’s portfolio will span human resources as well as facilities and IT, ensuring appropriate service and support is provided by all functional areas at each office location.
Specific responsibilities will include:
People and Culture
Developing best practices and programs to attract and engage staff, including orientations, learning, and development opportunities.
Leading staff recruitment, onboarding, and retention.
Establishing and implementing a consistent and tailored performance evaluation model with a view to boost engagement, while identifying learning and development opportunities.
Overseeing staff compensation and performance evaluations.
Administration of benefits and vacation allowances.
Creating and updating firm-wide policies by gaining buy-in and developing related training where applicable to ensure consistent application and compliance.
Leading performance management and disciplinary actions where required.
Monitoring and evaluating systems, processes, and related reporting to comply with all workplace law requirements.
Leading the execution of firm events and supporting third party events.
Participating in the broader legal and HR communities to stay current on best practices and innovations.
Supporting the firm’s overall equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts.
Facilities and IT
Overseeing all facilities and space requirements; managing and leading lease negotiations.
Handling phone and internet vendors as well as all office supply and services procurement.
With support from the external IT Consultant, providing overall oversight for technology, including the implementation and training for the firm’s key software systems.
Essential Qualities and Compensation
Murphy Battista’s Director of Administration role will be optimal for an experienced leader who has a passion for professional services, fostering positive cultures, and pursuing operational excellence across multiple locations. Ideal candidates will come with a depth of management experience in human resources or operations, preferably in the context of injury law, law firms, or other professional services such as accounting, finance, real estate, and engineering. Management experience supporting multiple office locations would be an asset.
